Electroconvulsive Therapy

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is a safe and effective treatment option for individuals facing severe mental health conditions that do not respond to traditional medications. At Good Samaritan, we offer ECT to help patients regain stability and improve their quality of life.

Who Can Benefit from ECT?

ECT is most commonly used to treat patients with severe depression who:

  • Do not respond to medications
  • Cannot tolerate medication side effects
  • Require a faster treatment response due to severe symptoms

ECT may also be recommended for individuals who are:

  • Experiencing extreme agitation, delusions, or suicidal thoughts
  • Suffering from catatonia or refusing to eat or drink
  • Living with bipolar disorder, during extreme episodes of mania or depression
  • Experiencing psychotic episodes related to schizophrenia

How Does ECT Work?

ECT involves a carefully controlled electrical stimulation to the brain under general anesthesia. This procedure helps reset brain activity, alleviating severe symptoms and stabilizing mental health. Once improvement is observed, medications are introduced or resumed to maintain progress.

Schedule

Electroconvulsive Therapy is administered by Psychiatrist, Dr. Glen Oriaifo. If you would like more information or have questions regarding ECT treatment, please contact us at 812-885-3292.
