Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine has been around for decades, but exciting advances in the field are helping us diagnose certain cancers in their earliest stages, as well as treat a variety of benign and malignant conditions effectively and painlessly without the need for surgery. This is good news for our patients and their families.

Nuclear Medicine involves the use of radionuclides that are injected, ingested or inhaled and tracked using imaging equipment. A special camera takes pictures of the body and then records this information on a computer screen. Good Samaritan Hospital has four such cameras. The images produced enable our nuclear technologists to assess organ function and identify abnormal tissues or new fractures in bone long before they appear in conventional imaging so they can be treated before they become major problems.

All of Good Samaritan Hospital's nuclear technologists are certified by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). They use nuclear medicine daily as a non-invasive tool to screen cardiology patients before heart catheterizations and to help our physicians structure patient care.
